Elizabeth Blackwell (1821-1910)
First Female American Doctor
Elizabeth Blackwell was refused admission to every medical school in America before students at Geneva Medical College voted to admit her. After finishing first in her class, Blackwell became the first woman to graduate from medical school. Blackwell worked in some of the neediest sections of London and New York City. Her practice focused on women and children. During the American Civil War, Blackwell and her sister Emily helped train nurses for the battlefields. Blackwell helped found two medical colleges for women before her 1910 death.
