A "never hinged" stamp has never had a stamp hinge attached to the back of it. A stamp hinge is a small piece of folded paper with a moisture-activated adhesive, used to attach a stamp to an album page. Applying a hinge to the back of a stamp slightly damages the stamp's gum. Because never hinged stamps are closer to their original condition than previously hinged stamps, they are more favored by some collectors.
