2008 42¢ Flags of Our Nation
Colorado Coin Cover

This Flags of Our Nation Coin Cover features the Colorado stamp from the Flags of Our Nation Series, two uncirculated state quarters, and a cachet, or picture, that reflects the history of the state.

The state flag of Colorado was commemorated on a 2008 U.S. postage stamp as part of the Flags of Our Nation Series. Designed by Andrew Carlisle Carson, the flag was adopted on June 5, 1911. The blue stripes of the flag symbolize Colorado’s clear blue skies and state flower, the columbine. The white stripe across the middle represents the state’s snow-capped mountains, while the red of the “C” (which stands for Colorado) reflects the color of most of the state’s soil. The gold disc in the center of the “C” is meant to signify the state’s history in gold mining and ample sunshine.

Minted in 2006, the Colorado State Quarter features the Rocky Mountains, an expansive range that stretches over 3,000 miles from northern British Columbia, Canada, to New Mexico. The highest peak in the Rockies is Colorado’s Mount Elbert, which reaches 14,440 feet above sea level. One of the state’s nicknames, “Colorful Colorado,” also appears on the coin, celebrating the state’s beautiful mountains, rivers, and plains that make it a popular tourist destination.

The Colorado Flags of Our Nation Coin First Day Cover shows the Central Pacific Railroad passing in front of one of Colorado’s legendary mountain ranges. Running from California to Utah, the Central Pacific Railroad was the western portion of the First Transcontinental Railroad, completed on May 10, 1869.
