In 2019, the US Mint released a new coin in its Native American $1 Coin Program. The design honors Native American contributions to the US Space Program. Some of the most famous Native American figures in the Space Program have been John Herrington (a man of Chickasaw ancestry who performed three spacewalks on the International Space Sttion in 2002) and Mary Golda Ross (a woman of Cherokee ancestry who was one of the first female Native American engineers and one of the engineers who helped develop the Agena spacecraft for the Gemini and Apollo missions).
