The 101st Airborne Division is one of the US Army’s most decorated units. Active for just six weeks in 1918, the unit earned its “Screaming Eagles” nickname three years later when it was reactivated.  The 101st served with distinction during World War II, leading the paratrooper drops during the D-Day Invasion and participating in Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge.  They served briefly in the Korean War and were then called upon to protect the “Little Rock Nine” (a group of African-American students entering a previously segregated school) in Arkansas.
The 101st returned to combat in 1965, deploying to Vietnam.  There they participated in 15 campaigns, notably the Battles of Hamburger Hill and Firebase Ripcord.  Since that time, the 101st has participated in the Persian Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.  In addition to earning 30 unit decorations, the 101st has been noted in several movies, books, songs, and video games, most famously in the book and TV series Band of Brothers.
