Get a U.S. Half Dollar Enhanced to Honor Operation Iraqi Freedom

This Mystic-exclusive US half dollar pictures a member of the 173rd Airborne taking a moment of rest after a March 2003 jump into northern Iraq. The jump, involving about 1,000 paratroopers, was one of the largest airborne operations since World War II.

Dropping into the darkness, the soldiers found themselves waist-deep in mud that filled their gun barrels and left some of them barefoot. By morning, many were shocked at the beautiful landscape around them – lush green grass and mountains – a far cry from the dusty city streets they’d seen on the news. They were greeted by generous Kurdish allies, and together they secured a nearby airfield, opening a new front in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
