Program Background

  • The 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program was a one-year initiative to honor
    the District of Columbia and the five U.S. Territories
  • Under this program, the reverse design of the quarter-dollar changed six times in 2009.
  • The coins were issued in equal sequential intervals for that one year.
  • The quarters were released in the following order:
    • The District of Columbia
    • The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico
    • Guam
    • American Samoa
    • The United States Virgin Islands
    • The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
  • This program immediately followed the 50 State Quarters® Program, which ended in 2008.
  • The 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters are legal tender coinage, issued by the
    United States Mint, and are available in circulation.

Design

  • The 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program designs are displayed on the reverse
    (tails) of the quarters, while the obverse (heads) of the quarters will continue to bear the familiar image of
    George Washington.
  • The designs were developed through a consultative process involving the chief executive of the District of
    Columbia and each territory, and the Commission of Fine Arts, and were selected after review by the
    Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.
  • The Secretary of the Treasury selected all final designs.
