This uncirculated US Silver Dollar coin was minted in 2009 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The front of the coin features a portrait of President Lincoln based on the statue of him at the Lincoln Memorial. The back of the coin includes a portion of his Gettysburg Address, reading: “We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that his nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth.” A portion of the proceeds from this coin went to the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, which used the funds for programs dedicated to Lincoln. Then, just days after the Civil War ended, Abraham Lincoln became the first US President to be assassinated.
