Virgin Islands Quarter Design Elements: The U.S. bought the former Danish West Indies in 1917. The outline of the three major islands, St Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John are pictured on the quarter. The yellow breast or banana quit bird, the official bird, is on a yellow cedar flower. Behind the bird is a Tyre Palm. The islands’ motto is “United in Pride and Hope.”
