Robert A. Taft (1889-1953)
Statesman
Robert Alphonso Taft was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of America’s 27th President, William Howard Taft. After attending Yale and then Harvard Law School, Taft became a lawyer and served in the Ohio state legislature. Taft was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1938, and was re-elected twice. In the 1940, 1948, and 1952 presidential elections, Taft campaigned for the Republican nomination for President. Taft was nicknamed “Mr. Republican” because of his influence on the policy of the party.
