U.S. #1165 honors Finnish soldier, statesman, and strategist Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, the Marshal and President of Finland. The eighth issue in the “Champions of Liberty” Series, the portrait is based on two statues in Helsinki, Finland. 
 
Baron Carl Gustaf Mannerheim (1867-1951)
Soldier, Statesman, and Strategist
Born in the Grand Duchy of Finland to a family of Finland Swedish nobles, Mannerheim rose to the rank of general in the Russian army. Following the Bolshevik revolution, Finland declared its independence. A civil war over class soon followed with Mannerheim joining the capitalist or “White” side. 
 
When Finland was at war with the Soviet Union between 1939 and 1944, Mannerheim became commander of Finland’s armed forces.
