Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919)
Industrialist and Philanthropist
In the mid-1870s, Andrew Carnegie opened the Edgar Thomson Steel Works in Braddock, Pennsylvania. The success of this first mill led to the creation of the Carnegie Steel Company in 1892. This was later merged with a number of other steel mills to form U.S. Steel.
Carnegie used his fortune to found the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Carnegie Mellon University. He also donated money to schools, libraries, and universities in the U.S. and the United Kingdom.
