John Muir (1838-1914)
Explorer, Naturalist and Writer
Born in Scotland, Muir’s family moved to the U.S. when John was 11. Muir loved nature and traveled through many regions of the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Arctic. He spent six years living in the Yosemite area. He campaigned for preservation of the land and was influential in the creation of America’s first national park, Yosemite, in 1890. Muir founded the Sierra Club in 1892. This influential organization continues Muir’s conservation work to this day.
In 1899, Muir accompanied E.H. Harriman on his Alaska Expedition to study the plants and animals of the recently acquired territory.
