The Story Behind Love Stamps…

Following the success of the first Christmas stamps issued in the 1960s, the USPS sought to issue more holiday-related stamps.  A holiday with a close connection to greeting cards, Valentine’s Day was a natural choice to receive its own special stamp.  The USPS issued its first Love stamp in 1973, though they didn’t call it a Love stamp.  They called it “A Special Stamp for Someone Special.”  The stamp was widely popular with collectors and mailers alike.  And when the first-class postage rate increased the following year, many requested a Love stamp at the new rate, but they didn’t get one.

It would be nine years before another Love stamp appeared.  And it wasn’t until 1987 that the USPS officially created the Love series, promising a new stamp every year.  By the following year, annual production of Love stamps neared one billion.

Over the years, the Love series has grown with fun, colorful, and touching stamps.  While many picture hearts, others picture birds, flowers, cherubs, candy, and more.  Love stamps are a fun and fanciful part of our US stamp program.  Get your instant collection today and save.
