U.S. #1725 commemorates the 200th anniversary of the founding of El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe, which was the first settlement in Alta, California.

Alta California
In 1777, as the Americans were struggling for independence in northeastern America, Spain was increasing its presence in western North America. Many military posts, known as presidios, were created. Then on November 29, 1777, the first non-military settlement was created in the California area. Its sole purpose was to function as a granary, as the presidios were not self-sufficient. The settlement was named Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe.    Although nothing remains of the settlement’s primitive buildings, the modern city of San Jose developed on the very spot where the settlement was located.
