Talking Pictures – 50th Anniversary
The first film successfully to feature sound was “The Jazz Singer,” released in 1927. Mostly silent, the film features some talking and singing by Al Jolson, an extremely popular entertainer of that era. Hollywood had already been established worldwide as the dominant source of movie production at that time. The introduction of this new technology increased the impact that movies have had on American life.

Hollywood remains the motion picture capital of the world. A district of the city of Los Angeles, Hollywood first attracted movie makers due to the great variety of scenery there. This industry is a great source of revenue and a significant source of employment. The motion pictures created in Hollywood continue to have a dramatic impact on the world.
