Herman Melville (1819-91)
Although he was born and died in New York City, Melville lived a major portion of his life in Massachusetts. Widely regarded as one of America’s greatest novelists, he is best known as the author of “Moby Dick.” Melville wrote the novel in Pittsfield, and set the early chapters of the book in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Melville also wrote the novella, “Billy Budd.” Melville was the first author to have his works collected and published by the Library of America.
