Established in 1834, Star Routes are postal routes on which mail is delivered by a private individual under contract with the post office. At the time this act went into effect, stage coaches were the principal means of transportation. Later, boats, trains, and even airplanes were introduced. The truck on this stamp is typical of those used in the 1920s.
