The image on the 32-cent Ferry Boat stamp is actually a composite drawing based on several boats from the early 1900s. The Newark II (1902) and the Chicago II (1901), however, were the primary sources for the design. Ferry boats have been used for hundreds of years. Early ferries were often just rafts which were either rowed or moved by poles. Cables were later used to draw the ferries, and today, most ferries are powered by their own engines.
