The Pledge of Allegiance was first recited in 1892, in honor of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America. Since then, it has undergone two alterations; in 1924, the phrase "the flag of the United States of America" was substituted for "my flag," and in 1954, the words "under God" were added by Congress. The pledge was officially adopted by the United States in 1942. In 1993, this stamp was reissued with a red "USA" and 29¢ denomination.
