1994 Christmas First Day Cover Set
This set of six Fleetwood First Day Covers features the four face-different Christmas stamps issued in 1994. The Madonna and Child and Stocking stamps came in sheet and booklet form.
Since the first Christmas stamps were issued in November 1962, the Postal Service has spread holiday cheer through these special issues.
The Madonna And Child design was based on a 1663 painting by Elizabetta Airani. This was the first traditional Christmas stamp to feature the work of a female artist.
The Christmas Stocking stamp marks the first time this symbol of Christmas was used on a Contemporary Christmas stamp. The stuffed bear sticking out of the stocking is microprinted with “1994” on the left part of his shirt and “Christmas” on his left ear.
The stamp showing a stylized Santa holding a small green package was issued in booklet form.
The Holiday Cardinal stamp was for use in ATM machines. The pane of 18 is the same size as a dollar bill. This stamp could be used throughout the winter, rather than just around Christmas.
All the contemporary Christmas stamps were first released on October 20, 1994, in Harmony, Minnesota.
The first day ceremony for the traditional stamp took place at the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.
