Milton Hershey opened the Lancaster Caramel Co. in 1886. At the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, he purchased a German chocolate-making machine. By 1900, he sold the caramel company so that he could concentrate on producing chocolate. He built a new factory in his hometown of Derry Township and began producing the world-famous Hershey's milk chocolate bars. With the wealth generated by his incredibly successful business, Hershey became a philanthropist of legendary proportions.
