This stamp pictures a botanical illustration by German artist Maria Sibylla Merian, who lived from 1647 to 1717. It features a flowering pineapple with two varieties of cockroaches. The stamp is part of a book of 20 that also contained Merian’s Citron with moths and beetle. 
 
The stamps were issued during National Women’s History month. The subjects of the stamps are from a collection of hand-colored, engraved plates the artist created while studying in Surinam for two years. The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., now houses the 70 plates.
