Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames were pioneers in the field of modern design. Although best known for their innovative furniture, the talented husband-and-wife design team also made some groundbreaking contributions in architecture, filmmaking, exhibit design, and more.
In the late 1990s a Library of Congress exhibit entitled “The Work of Charles and Ray Eames” toured the United States, Europe, and Japan closing in 2006. The installation was a tribute to the wide and varied scope of the Eameses’ work, from furniture design to science films. It included an assortment of personal documents, slides taken by the Eameses, and various products designed by the dynamic design duo.
Among the personal documents were three unique Christmas cards, created by the couple. Two of these cards, made in 1944-46, featured modern graphic designs. A third featured a glass ball with an image of the Eameses waving from inside. Another item in the exhibit proved the versatility of the couple, showing a Christmas tree they had created from molded plywood chair legs.
In 2008, the U.S. Postal Service issued a 42¢ stamp featuring an Eames Christmas card, one of a pane of 16 stamps honoring the contributions of Charles and Ray Eames to American design.
