First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, New York.

About the WPA Posters set:  Includes 10 different stamp designs picturing different WPA posters from the era of FDR’s New Deal.  Issued to celebrate the Workers Projects Administration and its contributions to the economy and American culture.

History the stamps represent:  Zoos had surged in popularity during the 1920s.  However, decreased funding, worsened by the Depression, left many US zoos in dilapidated and unsafe conditions.  Luckily for zoo owners and millions of American families, President Roosevelt launched a number of New Deal programs to fix those zoos and build new ones.

These programs, including the Works Progress Administration (WPA), benefited communities in two ways.  First, they provided jobs to the millions of Americans unemployed by the Depression.  And second, they offered struggling families an affordable and educational form of recreation.

While zoos were a small part of the total number of relief projects, more than 80% of American zoos benefited from this federal funding.  Dozens of zoos were improved or enlarged, with more spectacular displays, better cages for the animals, and new educational exhibits.  And some of America’s most famous zoos were built during this time, including New York’s Central Park Zoo and California’s San Diego Zoo.

Additionally, the WPA created fun posters and educational books, like Who’s Who in the Zoo, to increase public interest.  All these efforts paid off as zoo attendance soared and Americans found a new favorite activity for the whole family.
