Why the stamp was issued: To commemorate the Workers Projects Administration (WPA) and its many accomplishments.
About the stamp design: Pictures the “Work with Care” WPA poster from the Prints & Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. Designed by Maribel O. Gray in collaboration with art director Antonio Alcalá. The poster was created to support the ideas of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal programs.
First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, New York.
About the WPA Posters set: Includes 10 different stamp designs picturing different WPA posters from the era of FDR’s New Deal. Issued to celebrate the Workers Projects Administration and its contributions to the economy and American culture.
History the stamps represent: While President Roosevelt’s New Deal and Works Progress Administration (WPA) programs gave millions of Americans jobs, workplace safety became a growing concern. More people than ever before were working in factories, but many did not realize the dangers they faced without taking simple precautions.
One way to decrease injuries was the passage of the National Labor Relations Act, which allowed workers to join unions and demand a safer workplace. Across the country, Safety Divisions were created and expanded. These agencies staged regular inspections to ensure safe conditions. They also offered training in workplace safety, first aid, and accident prevention. In one year alone, this training benefited 484 communities in 35 states, likely preventing thousands of injuries and saving lives.
To provide a constant reminder of the importance of workplace safety, the WPA’s Federal Art Project produced a series of posters. These included reminders to stay alert, wear protective clothing, tips for hand and eye safety, and to be careful around machinery.
When combined, all these efforts saved lives and created a strong and competent American workforce, which would be vital to the war that soon followed.
