About the stamp design: Circular in shape and includes an image of a traditional black and white soccer ball. Stamp art created by artist Daniel Nyari.
Special design details: The design had a special coating applied to certain areas of the stamp during printing to give it a textured feel.
First Day City: First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Erin, Wisconsin, during the US Open golf tournament which was held from June 12-18.
About the Have a Ball! set: Issued to commemorate the popularity of sports in the United States, both as players and spectators. Includes eight stamp designs, each picturing a different ball: football, volleyball, soccer ball, golf ball, baseball, basketball, tennis ball, and kickball.
History the stamp represents: Association football (soccer) only came about during the early 1800s, but the idea of the game began long before. Some historians say soccer was being played as many as 3,000 years ago in ancient China and Japan. The game looked a lot different than today, with the ball just a leather pouch filled with fur.
Even after soccer reached Europe, balls were still fragile and often fell apart during gameplay. In 1838, Charles Goodyear invented stronger rubber, and balls became much sturdier. They were good for kicking, but could cause serious injury when hit with a player’s head. The next new soccer balls were developed with special materials to be strong plus allow for more give.
In 1863, official game rules were laid down in England by the Football Association. After that, the sport spread, with first official national and international soccer games held in 1872. The World Cup, arguably the most famous international championship today, is the organized by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). It is held every four years and is a major event for countries around the globe.
Events like the FIFA World Cup have made soccer an international phenomenon. With more than 240 million players across the globe and millions more spectators, soccer has become the most popular sport in the world.
