History the stamp represents: Newell Convers (N.C.) Wyeth, father of Andrew Wyeth, as an accomplished American illustrator who began a long line of talented artists. N.C.’s mother had a big influence on him and encouraged his artistic talents. He became a proficient watercolor painter at 12 and his first commission came when he was 20. His paintings of “true, solid American subjects” appealed to a wide audience and earned him plenty of work.

In 1908, Wyeth married Carolyn Bockius and went on to have five children. Wyeth was a model father and encouraged each child to explore their individual talents. Andrew, Henriette, and Carolyn studied under their father and all became artists, while Ann became a composer and Nathaniel an engineer. Two of N.C.’s students, Peter Hurd and John C. McCoy, married his daughters, Henriette and Ann.

N.C. Wyeth finished over 3,000 paintings and illustrated 112 books in his lifetime, though he sometimes wished he could paint for himself instead of on commission. Wyeth was killed tragically in 1945 when his car was hit by a train. He had been working on a series of paintings for a life insurance company at the time, so his son Andrew and son-in-law John completed the paintings. Thanks to Wyeth’s students and works, his legacy lives on today.
