History the stamp represents: Peter Hurd was a painter who studied, along with Andrew and Henriette Wyeth, under N.C. Wyeth. He is responsible for introducing both Andrew and N.C. to egg tempera.

When Hurd was young, he attended New Mexico Military academy and West Point before realizing his true calling as a painter. He studied at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and then traveled to Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, where he became a student of famous American illustrator N.C. Wyeth.

Hurd researched egg tempera and developed a technique he shared with the Wyeths. Hurd’s egg tempera consisted of mixing egg yolk and water with raw pigment – he did not add oil like other tempera painters. Andrew like the permanent and sturdy quality of egg tempera over watercolor and used Hurd’s technique for many of his paintings, like Spring Fed.

In 1929, Hurd married N.C.’s oldest daughter, Henriette, and the two moved to a ranch in New Mexico. There, Hurd became a successful regional landscape artist whose work was published in Life. Impressed by his paintings, the magazine hired Hurd as a combat correspondent during World War II. He drew and painted hundreds of pieces during that time. Hurd’s successes earned him a place in art history next to Andrew Wyeth and his family.
