About the stamp design:  Pictures the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland.  The design was created in close collaboration with Disney Creative Director David Pacheco and the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department.  They created new art especially for use on the stamp.

First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, the city that’s home to the original Disneyland park.

About the Disney Villains set:  Includes 10 stamp designs picturing classic Disney villains:  Maleficent, Honest John, Cruella De Vil, Captain Hook, the Queen of Hearts, Lady Tremaine, Ursula, the Queen, Gaston, and Scar.  The selvage of the pane includes a larger image of the evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.  The reverse side of the pane showcases drawings of the 10 characters and quotes by each one.  The designs were created in close collaboration with Disney Creative Director David Pacheco and the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department.  They created new art especially for use on the stamps.  According to the USPS, these stamps were created to celebrate “the rich legacy of the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department.”

History the stamp represents:  The Queen of Hearts, unlike other Disney villains, is initially pleasant to the heroine.  She even invites Alice to play croquet with her.  However, the queen’s happy mood fades quickly and she calls for Alice’s execution without warning.

While most evil characters are to be taken seriously, the Queen of Hearts comes off more humorous than deadly.  Even though she often commands for people to be beheaded, it is rarely carried out.  Though her threats are mostly empty, the Queen of Hearts has an extremely short temper, and relishes in that fact.  She unexpectedly goes from happy to murderous in a matter of seconds, which some say makes her the maddest character in Wonderland.  The queen is also a sore loser.  Her subjects cheat for her during games so she will always win.  When Alice plays croquet with her, the Queen suddenly falls down and immediately blames Alice.  The King of Hearts suggests a trial, but it is no ordinary trial as the Queen dispenses the sentence (a beheading) before the verdict.

Despite the fact the Queen of Hearts rarely follows through with her threats, she is noted for her unpredictable, violent behavior and is highly feared by the residents of Wonderland.  It is these qualities and her unusual method of doling out “justice” that earn her a place as one of Disney’s classic villains.
