First Day City:  The First Day of Issue was held at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas.

About the Hot Wheels set:  The USPS issued 10 stamp designs celebrating the 50th anniversary of one of America’s best known and best loved toy brands – Hot Wheels.  Each stamp pictures a different well-known Hot Wheels car zooming down the company’s iconic bright orange race track.  The cars shown on the stamps are:  Purple Passion, Rocket-Bye-Baby, Rigor Motor, Rodger Dodger, Mach Speeder, Twin Mill, Bone Shaker, HW40, Deora II, and Sharkruiser.

History the stamp represents:  One of the most memorable Hot Wheels released in 1994 was the Rigor Motor.  The spooky Halloween-themed car was inspired by a hit television show from 30 years earlier – The Munsters.

The Rigor Motor (a play on rigor mortis) was loosely based on the Munster family car, the DRAG-U-LA.  The DRAG-U-LA was designed by famed show car designer Tom Daniel, working for George Barris (who designed the Munster Koach and the Batmobile).  The show’s car was made with a real fiberglass coffin, a Ford Mustang V-8 engine, silver spider hubcaps, organ pipe exhaust pipes, a gravestone license plate, and antique lamps in place of head and tail lights.

The Rigor Motor borrowed several elements from the Munsters car, namely the coffin shape, organ pipe exhaust, and rear seating under a large plastic bubble.  When first released in 1994, the Rigor Motor sported a ruby-red metallic paint job.  The following year, it was released with all exposed metal painted with metal-flake black, which became popular among Hot Wheels fans.  In the years since, the Rigor Motor has appeared in a variety of other colors.

The Rigor Motor has become a mainstay of Hot Wheels’ Fright Cars, Grave Rave, Skull and Crossbones, and Dark Rider series, making it a perennial Halloween favorite.
