About the stamp designs:  Pictures a photograph by Len Rizzi of the famous Bone Shaker Hot Wheels car on the classic bright orange track.

First Day City:  The First Day of Issue was held at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas.

About the Hot Wheels set:  The USPS issued 10 stamp designs celebrating the 50th anniversary of one of America’s best known and best loved toy brands – Hot Wheels.  Each stamp pictures a different well-known Hot Wheels car zooming down the company’s iconic bright orange race track.  The cars shown on the stamps are:  Purple Passion, Rocket-Bye-Baby, Rigor Motor, Rodger Dodger, Mach Speeder, Twin Mill, Bone Shaker, HW40, Deora II, and Sharkruiser.

History the stamp represents:  Some Hot Wheels are designed for speed.  Some for nostalgia.  And some, like the Bone Shaker, are just plain cool.

Designed by Larry Wood in 2006, the Bone Shaker is a Hot Wheels original, though its shape is loosely based on the 1930s Ford Model A pickup truck.  Wood had fun designing the car, taking pleasure in all the neat details – from the skull and crossbones on the doors, to the menacing skull grill, and the skeleton hands grasping the headlights.  It was not overly designed or flashy, but it had a unique personality, and fans loved it.

The Bone Shaker was an instant sensation as soon as it was released.  People could not get enough of it, and it won fan favorite awards immediately.  Hot Wheels knew they had a hit on their hands, so the Bone Shaker quickly became the company’s signature car – adorning school supplies, video games, and a wide variety of other items.  Hot Wheels designer Ryu Asada said, “The Bone Shaker has become one of the most iconic Hot Wheels cars ever made.”  To date, more than 70 different versions have been produced, not including larger-scale models.

In 2011, the Bone Shaker was made into a full-size drivable car.  Larry Wood got the opportunity to drive it and said, “That’s what a hot rod’s supposed to be all about!  All I need now is an orange track!”
