Uncle Sam is a well-known symbol of the United States and has been honored on many US postage stamps over the years.  In 2017, the iconic star-spangled man was pictured on the stamp used to cover postage on an additional ounce.  When that rate changed in 2019, the design was re-printed.  The original stamps were printed in sheets, while the 2019 stamps were on coils. When Uncle Sam was first introduced by Thomas Nast and James Montgomery Flagg, he was depicted as a white man with white hair and a beard.  This image of the patriotic figure made a big impact, and it is how he has been pictured ever since.  The 2017 and 2019 Uncle Sam's Hat stamps took his traditional look and updated it for the modern age. These new stamps picture eight images representing Uncle Sam.  Each has a different skin color and no face or hair.  The diversity of the American people has grown by leaps and bounds over the years.  This design is a way of saying anyone can be Uncle Sam – no matter what age, gender, or race – as long as they love their country.  In a world full of conflicting political views and ever-challenging obstacles, the idea of solidarity despite differences of opinion was more important than ever in 2019.
