First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Lafayette Park in Detroit, Michigan, as part of the “Sesame Street Road Trip,” a celebration event held in 10 cities across the US.

About the Sesame Street set:  In 2019, Sesame Street – everyone’s favorite educational and playful children’s television show – celebrated its 50th anniversary.  To commemorate the occasion, the USPS issued 16 new Forever stamps picturing different characters from the show:  Big Bird, Ernie, Bert, Cookie Monster, Rosita, The Count, Oscar the Grouch, Abby Cadabby, Herry Monster, Julia, Guy Smiley, Snuffleupagus, Elmo, Telly, Grover, and Zoe.  The back of the pane of 16 pictures the official Sesame Street 50th anniversary artwork.

History the stamp represents:  Rosita is an optimistic and playful 5-year-old whose full name, Rosita la Monstrua de las Cuevas, means “the Monster of the Caves.”  Hailing from Mexico, she speaks both Spanish and English, often mixing words from both languages when she talks.

Rosita loves singing and playing guitar, reading and writing in both English and Spanish, and finding ways to share her heritage with others.  She often teaches Spanish words to friends Elmo, Abby, and Zoe.  In return, Abby is teaching Rosita to speak “Dragonfly.”

When Rosita first appeared on Sesame Street, she had wings and resembled a fruit bat.  Since her appearance on the show, in 1991, she has had a makeover, but her sensitive and caring nature remain the same.  She conveys her compassion physically with lots of hugs.

Having a very loving family, Rosita has introduced us to her abuela (grandmother), mom, and dad.  Her father, Ricardo, served in the military and came back in a wheelchair.  Many children felt a connection with Rosita as she learned to accept this new version of her father.  She has taught multiple lessons on acceptance, especially on accepting oneself.
