First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Lafayette Park in Detroit, Michigan, as part of the “Sesame Street Road Trip,” a celebration event held in 10 cities across the US.

About the Sesame Street set:  In 2019, Sesame Street – everyone’s favorite educational and playful children’s television show – celebrated its 50th anniversary.  To commemorate the occasion, the USPS issued 16 new Forever stamps picturing different characters from the show:  Big Bird, Ernie, Bert, Cookie Monster, Rosita, The Count, Oscar the Grouch, Abby Cadabby, Herry Monster, Julia, Guy Smiley, Snuffleupagus, Elmo, Telly, Grover, and Zoe.  The back of the pane of 16 pictures the official Sesame Street 50th anniversary artwork.

History the stamp represents:  Count Von Count has been a member of the Sesame Street family since 1972.  He bears a comical resemblance to Count Dracula, but that’s where the similarity ends.

The Count is a happy and helpful character who enjoys counting anything and everything.  In one song, he said he sometimes even counts himself.  The Count likes to find math in his everyday activities, which usually include more counting and playing the organ.  In recent years, the Count has led a daily segment called “Number of the Day,” in which he plays notes on his organ while counting up to the featured number.  When he counts to a number, there is usually a crash of thunder and a flash of lightning, even when it’s sunny.  The Count explains that he has his own personal cloud to make this possible.

The Count has his own castle where he lives with his cat Fatatita and his bats Grisha, Misha, Sasha, and Tatiana.  He also drives a special car, the Countmobile, which looks like a bat.  The Count’s favorite number is 34,969 because it’s a perfect square of 187.  And his favorite time is 2:30, likely because of the tooth-related pun, “Tooth-Hurty.”

The Coun’s outgoing and enthusiastic personality makes him a friend to everyone on Sesame Street and his counting makes for fun games for all.
