First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Lafayette Park in Detroit, Michigan, as part of the “Sesame Street Road Trip,” a celebration event held in 10 cities across the US.

About the Sesame Street set:  In 2019, Sesame Street – everyone’s favorite educational and playful children’s television show – celebrated its 50th anniversary.  To commemorate the occasion, the USPS issued 16 new Forever stamps picturing different characters from the show:  Big Bird, Ernie, Bert, Cookie Monster, Rosita, The Count, Oscar the Grouch, Abby Cadabby, Herry Monster, Julia, Guy Smiley, Snuffleupagus, Elmo, Telly, Grover, and Zoe.  The back of the pane of 16 pictures the official Sesame Street 50th anniversary artwork.

History the stamp represents:  There are many monsters who live on Sesame Street, but only one Oscar the Grouch.  Oscar despises all things “nice,” like rainbows, candy, and chocolate.  Being grouchy makes him happy, but being happy makes him grouchy again.  He loves loud noises, collecting junk, arguing, rainy days, and other common annoyances.

At first, Oscar might not seem like much fun to be around, but he does have a soft side.  He is a caring friend to his pet worm, Slimey, his pet elephant, Fluffy, and his pet pig, Spot.  Sometimes, he is even nice to human children who pass by his trash can – though he will never admit it.  Speaking of Oscar’s trash can, it may be messy, but it is filled with recyclable and reusable materials.  But do not tell him he is doing something positive and helping take care of the planet.

Everybody knows at least one person like Oscar, but he proves that even the grouchiest people can still be nice.  And it is often those people who need friends the most, though it can be hard for them to find those friends.  Oscar found his best friend Slimey by accident and the two have been inseparable ever since.  Slimey knows Oscar is a different sort of friend, and that it’s OK for friends to not be the same.  And, above all else, that’s what Sesame Street always shows us.
