First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Lafayette Park in Detroit, Michigan, as part of the “Sesame Street Road Trip,” a celebration event held in 10 cities across the US.

About the Sesame Street set:  In 2019, Sesame Street – everyone’s favorite educational and playful children’s television show – celebrated its 50th anniversary.  To commemorate the occasion, the USPS issued 16 new Forever stamps picturing different characters from the show:  Big Bird, Ernie, Bert, Cookie Monster, Rosita, The Count, Oscar the Grouch, Abby Cadabby, Herry Monster, Julia, Guy Smiley, Snuffleupagus, Elmo, Telly, Grover, and Zoe.  The back of the pane of 16 pictures the official Sesame Street 50th anniversary artwork.

History the stamp represents:  Renowned for his feats of strength, Herry Monster joined Sesame Street in 1970.  He’s a strong and clumsy monster with a great sense of humor.  He may knock things over, but he’s always ready to help you fix them.

Herry is a talented athlete and especially enjoys playing baseball and lifting weights.  In fact, he’s so strong he doesn’t always realize his own strength.  He has a tendency to break things just by handling them.  But everyone on Sesame Street knows he’s a gentle and sensitive monster they can talk to.

Over the years, Herry has sung several songs and was one of the most frequent performers in Prairie Dawn’s plays.  He also starred in a number of Monsterpiece Theater shows and hosted “Monster Hits,” an awards show for Sesame Street’s best monster songs.  In the 1990s, Herry participated in “Monster Day Care.”  He would visit a child at a day care center and then tell the monsters at his own day care about everything he learned there.

Herry’s closest friends are Grover, Cookie Monster, Kermit, Bert, and Ernie.  He also loves his doll Hercules, who he sang about in the song “Moonshine” with Zoe.

Under his gruff exterior, Herry has a big heart that he gladly shares with all his Sesame Street pals.
