Why the stamp was issued:  To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

About the stamp design:  Pictures a simplified blue-and-green image of planet Earth with small green lines surrounding it and hand-lettered text which reads “EARTH DAY.” Artwork by Antonio Alcalá, typography by Ricky Altizer.

First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was canceled due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The First Day of Issue Postmark was from Denver, Colorado

History the stamp represents:  Every year on April 22, the world celebrates Earth Day. First observed in 1970 by the United States, over 193 countries now work together to host events promoting environmental protection. Some places even celebrate Earth Week, a full seven days devoted to conservation and making our planet a better place.

Between the burning of fossil fuels, overuse of plastic, deforestation, pollution, and many other harmful activities, planet Earth needs help. But it does not have to be “all or nothing” when it comes to being more environmentally conscious. There are some easy lifestyle changes that can make a big difference when lots of people get on board:

1. Use a refillable water bottle.
2. Cut down on single-use plastic items like plastic wrap and zipper bags – there are lots of eco-friendly options now!
3. Compost food waste to reduce the amount of garbage that goes into landfills – plus, it’s great for your fruit and vegetable garden.
4. When traveling, consider walking, riding a bicycle, or carpooling to reduce carbon emissions.

Making these changes will help ensure our planet will be safe and healthy for many generations to come.
