Why the stamp was issued: To celebrate America’s natural beauty and the enjoyment of going canoeing on one of our nation’s many waterways.

About the stamp design: Stamp pictures a hand-sketched and painted design by artist Gregory Manchess of a pair of people paddling a canoe.

Special design details: The selvage of the pane of 20 includes a painting of trees along a bank with a body of water and a canoe with a man holding an oar.

First Day City: Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the First Day of Issue Ceremony was held virtually on the USPS’s Facebook and Twitter pages. The First Day of Issue Postmark was from Incline Valley, Nevada, located on the north shore of Lake Tahoe and known for its ample opportunities for outdoor activities.

About the Enjoy the Great Outdoors set: Issued to celebrate America’s natural beauty and the many ways we can get out and enjoy it. Five stamps picturing different hand-sketched and painted designs by artist Gregory Manchess. They picture building a sandcastle, hiking, cross-country skiing, canoeing, and biking.

History the stamp represents: Summer is one of the best times of year to enjoy the outdoors. And canoeing is a great activity to do with the whole family canoeing.

Canoes have been around for thousands of years. They have been made of materials ranging from hollowed-out logs, tree bark, and canvas. Today, most are constructed of long-lasting plastic or fiberglass. Canoes were originally used for transportation of people and goods, but as technology advanced, they were gradually replaced by more efficient methods. Modern canoes are used for recreation or in athletic events.

As more waterways have become part of the National Parks Service over the years, it has created more opportunities for water recreation. Countless families take camping and canoeing trips to our nation’s national parks every year. A standard-size canoe is the perfect fit for two adults and two children. There is nothing better than a float trip on a calm river or lake – with life jackets on, of course! There is plenty of wildlife to see plus beautiful flowers and other plants. And, if you get too hot, there is always an opportunity for a swim in the cool water.

The best part about canoes is that many places across the country have canoes available for daily rental. That makes canoeing a fun and affordable way for all families to get out and enjoy the outdoors.
