There is one variety of lotus flower that is more well known than any other. Its scientific name is Nelumbo nucifera, but it is more commonly referred to as the Indian lotus or sacre lotus. It is native to India and East Asia, but has made its way to other areas via human cultivation.
The sacred lotus is a fairly large aquatic plant with a single plant sometimes spreading over three feet. Their leaves can be more than 30 inches across, while the beautiful flowers can measure one foot in diameter. These plants grow in water anywhere from one to eight feet deep.
While known for its beautiful flowers, the sacred lotus also has many culinary uses. Its rhizomes (thick, tuber-like roots) and seeds are used in many Asian cooking traditions. Varieties are classified based on whether they are grown for flower, rhizome, or seed harvesting. Flowers range from white and yellow to pink or red. Some blooms may have multiple colors on a single flower.
The sacred lotus is important in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions. It is also a common motif in Asian art. So the next time you see a painting, sculpture, or piece of jewelry with a lotus in it, you will know exactly what type of flower it is. Though nothing compares to the beauty of the real thing.
