First Day City:  The virtual First Day of Issue Ceremony was held on May 4th (celebrated as “May the 4th Be With You” by Star Wars fans) with First Day of Issue Postmark from Nicasio, California, the city which is home to Skywalker Ranch, home of Lucasfilm founder George Lucas.

About the Star Wars Droids set:  Includes 10 stamps commemorating the robot-like characters known as droids who are found throughout the Star Wars franchise.  Also indicate Disney and Lucasfilm’s promotion of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning and “Star Wars: Force for Change,” plus global nonprofit organization “FIRST” (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology).

History the stamp represents:  Perhaps the most famous droid in the Star Wars universe is R2-D2.  This little blue astromech droid has been with the heroes of the galaxy since the very beginning.  R2 served alongside Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, their children Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, and finally young Jedi Rey and her friends.

While R2-D2’s main function is that of an astromech (responsible for helping pilot X-wing fighters and other spacecraft), the droid has performed countless other tasks, too.  In fact, R2 and C-3PO are the only characters to have appeared in every Star Wars film (except Solo: A Star Wars Story).  R2-D2 was also one of the first characters ever to appear on screen in the original Star Wars trilogy.

In addition to his willingness to help his friends and go above and beyond his duties as an astromech, R2-D2 is also known for his spunky personality.  This is especially noticeable in his interactions with other droids, like C-3PO.  When R2’s noises are translated by other characters, his comments are often sarcastic and critical.  R2 also does not hesitate to use electric shocks to deter or threaten enemies (and sometimes friends).

Between his honorable deed and unforgettable personality, it’s no wonder so many people have sought to rebuild R2-D2 in the real world.
