Possibly the most self-aware droid in the Star Wars universe is L3-37.  In fact, she built herself out of parts from different types of droids – astromech, protocol, espionage droid, adn more.  Because of this, and because of all she learned, L3-37 was a big advocate for droid rights.

L3-37 once said to Lando Calrissian, "Sure, some guy in a factory probably pieced me together originally, and someone else programmed me, so to speak.  But then the galaxy itself forged me into who I am.  Because we learn, Lando.  We're programmed to learn.  Which means we grow.  We grow away from that singular moment of creation, become something new with each changing moment of our lives – yes, lives – and look at me: these parts.  I did this.  So maybe when we say the Maker, we're referring to the whole galaxy, or maybe we just mean ourselves.  Maybe we're our own makers, no matter who put the parts together."

While some characters in the Star Wars universe do not believe droids deserve any rights because they are built and programmed by humans, L3-37 squashes all of their arguments.  She proves that droids are capable of learning and growing just like humans are, and, therefore, deserve all the same rights and privileges.  This lesson applies to the real world to all people, animals, and, maybe someday, robots.
