First Day City:  The virtual First Day of Issue Ceremony was held on May 4th (celebrated as “May the 4th Be With You” by Star Wars fans) with First Day of Issue Postmark from Nicasio, California, the city which is home to Skywalker Ranch, home of Lucasfilm founder George Lucas.

About the Star Wars Droids set:  Includes 10 stamps commemorating the robot-like characters known as droids who are found throughout the Star Wars franchise.  Also indicate Disney and Lucasfilm’s promotion of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning and “Star Wars: Force for Change,” plus global nonprofit organization “FIRST” (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology).

History the stamp represents:  Along with R2-D2, C-3PO is one of the first characters people think of when Star Wars is mentioned.  While R2-D2 is an astromech droid in charge of repairing and piloting starcraft, C-3PO is what is known as a protocol droid.  This type of droid is responsible for providing language translations, cultural explanations, and more.

Like R2-D2, C-3PO has been in the Star Wars universe since the very beginning.  In fact, he was built and programmed by a young Anakin Skywalker.  C-3PO witnessed Anakin’s evolution from innocent boy to powerful Jedi, and, later, his fall to the Dark Side and transformation into Darth Vader.  He was also present for the birth of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa.  However, after this event, his memory banks were wiped in order to protect the children from their father.

Over the years, C-3PO was a companion to many humans and droids alike.  He aided diplomatic missions and translated countless important conversations.  While his personality was always rather formal and stiff, he was known for his occasional sarcasm as well (especially in interactions with R2-D2).  C-3PO’s abilities have made him into a droid many of us wish we could have in our own homes.  We can only hope that one day, new technology will make that dream a reality.
