  With all the battles in Star Wars, it's no wonder there was a class of droids designed to perform medical procedures.  These were most commonly 2-1B surgical droids, "the most efficient medical droid in teh Galaxy, even more capable than the Effex-Seven, and certainly possessing a better bedside manner."

2-1B droids were normally equipped with pincers on the end of each arm, though these could be replaced with medical instruments as needed.  They were programmed with some of the highest level of intelligence of any droid, giving them the experience of even the most skilled physicians.  Some 2-1B droids received specialized programming in neurosurgery, pediatrics, cybernetic limb replacements, alien biology, and more.  The droids became so popular across the galaxy that most medical centers and large starcraft were equipped with at least one.

Today's medical systems are better than they have ever been, but imagine how good they could be if we eliminated the risk of human error?  We already have robots that assist surgical procedures, but they are still operated by humans.  Star Wars presents a future where our medical care rests in the steady hands of a machine.  Their programming would feature state-of-the-art methods, and quality of care would be unprecedented.
