While R2-D2 is one of the most famous astromech droids in Star Wars, he was certainly not the only droid out there.  One other example was a C1-series astromech droid known as C1-10P, or "Chopper" for short.

Chopper served during the Clone Wars with teh Republic Navy.  His job was to help pilot and maintain Y-wings.  One day, his ship was shot down and he crash landed on a planet in rebellion against the Confederacy of Independent Systems.  He was rescued from the wreckage and went on to become the companion of Hera Syndulla, who later grew up to be a pilot.

Chopper helped crew and maintain Hera's ship, Ghost, which they sometimes used to conduct raids on the Empire.  As an older droid, Chopper's personality tended to be on the gruff side, and he delighted in arguing or pranking his crewmates.  In general, he tended to dislike other droids and humans, but tolerated the crew of the Ghost.  He even went so far as to risk his life to help save them on several occasions.  (Of course he would never admit to this.)

Chopper was often said to be "past his expiration date," and often stuck out in low-profile missions, but he still proved very useful to his shipmates.  It just goes to show that, while technology continues to evolve, old certainly does not mean useless.
