First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the Great American Stamp Show 2021 in Rosemont, Illinois.

About the Backyard Games set:  Includes eight designs picturing original artwork by Mick Wiggins of a different backyard game:  badminton, bocce, cornhole, croquet, flying disc, horseshoes, tetherball, and pick-up baseball.

History the stamp represents:  For many children, their first time being introduced to sports is in their family’s backyard.  One of the most popular backyard games is badminton.  It is an ideal sport to be played informally as the equipment is fairly straightforward, lightweight, and easy to use.  Since the rules are simple, it is a good introduction to racquet sports for younger children.

Badminton can be played with two to four people and can be set up on grass, dirt, sand, or any other soft surface.  (Professional games are usually played on indoor courts.). The game originated in British India in the mid-19th century, but quickly made its way across the globe.  The game was originally called Poona or Poonah after the town it first became popular in.  It eventually came to be known as badminton, and today is even played at the Summer Olympics in singles or doubles.  The Badminton World Federation is responsible for setting the rules and administering gameplay today.  It was founded in 1934 by Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland, and Wales.

Badminton can be played as competitively or as casually as players like.  It doesn’t require a lot of athleticism or skill to get started, but once these qualities are developed, badminton can become quite the competitive sport!
