About the Fruits Series:  Launched in 2016, with the release of the 10¢ Red Pears, 5¢ Pinot Noir Grapes, and 1¢ Albermarle Pippin Apples stamps, the Fruit Series replaced  stamps from the American Design definitive series of 2002.  Each stamp in the Fruit Series pictures an existing pen, ink, and watercolor illustration by John Burgoyne.

History the stamp represents:  The blueberry is one of America’s favorite fruits.  These berries are delicious, easy to eat, and fun to pick in the summertime.  But, did you know blueberries also have some impressive health benefits?

Blueberries are native to North America and have been cultivated here for hundreds of years.  But it wasn’t until recently that we discovered how good they are for you.  According to several scientific studies, here’s how eating more blueberries may improve your health:

Blueberries have some of the highest levels of antioxidants of any fruit or vegetable.  Antioxidants help prevent damage to our cells and may slow the aging process.  In some studies, regular blueberry consumption has shown to help lower blood pressure and decrease the risk of heart disease.  Eating more blueberries is also believed to fight brain aging and improve memory.  Since they are fairly low in sugar, blueberries may be a good choice for those with diabetes or insulin resistance.  In fact, early studies suggest eating more blueberries could improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar.
