2022 Sunflower Bouquet

  • Similar design to the 2022 Tulips Forever stamp
  • Intended for use on heavy cards, wedding invitations, etc.

Stamp Category:
Definitive
Value:  2-ounce Mail Rate
First Day of Issue:  March 24, 2022
First Day City:  Lawrence, Kansas
Quantity Issued:  35,000,000
Printed by:  Banknote Corporation of America
Printing Method:  Offset, Microprint
Format:  Panes of 20
Tagging:  Phosphor, block tag

Why the stamp was issued:  To cover the 2-ounce mail rate on heavy invitations for birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries, plus oversized greeting cards or other small packages that may need extra postage.

About the stamp design:  Pictures orange and yellow sunflowers with irises, dahlias, echinacea, and small red, purple, white, and pink flowers.  The stamp is similar to the Tulips Forever design also issued in 2022.  The design for this stamp was created using digital photography by Harold Davis.

First Day City:  There was no First Day of Issue Ceremony for this stamp, but the First Day of Issue Postmark was from Lawrence, Kansas, the home of the well-known Grinter’s Sunflower Farm.

History the stamp represents:  Sunflowers are one of the most popular blooms in the world.  Their bright colors remind us of summer days and warmer temperatures.  And since they come in a wide range of colors and sizes, they’re perfect for any occasion.

When picturing sunflowers, most of us think of towering stems with huge flower heads.  However, North America’s native, wild sunflowers can be quite small.  They can still reach heights of up to six feet, but have flower heads just three to four inches wide.  Wild sunflowers are easy to grow in your backyard and will bring lots of beneficial pollinators to your garden.  These flowers are especially popular with butterflies and hummingbirds.

The smaller size of wild sunflowers makes them ideal for delicate bouquets.  The United States Postal Service pictured such an arrangement on the 2022 two-ounce-rate stamp.  Paired with other colorful blooms, the design is a cheerful reminder of summer that can be enjoyed throughout the year.  That makes it perfect to mail greeting cards, wedding invitations, and other heavier letters.  Considering the universal appeal of sunflowers, there couldn’t have been a better deisng choice for such a stamp.
