In 1620, a group of English separatists landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts. The success of Plymouth Colony proved that man could live and prosper in New England. US #1420 was issued for the 350th anniversary of the historic event in 1970.  This neat cover was canceled in 1995 on the 375th anniversary of that event.  It's a fun and historic cover you'll be proud to add to your collection.

The Landing of the Pilgrims

During the early 1600s, a group of English Protestants separated from the Church of England. These people, known as Separatists, wanted to worship in their own way, but were not permitted to. On September 16, 1620, 41 Separatists and 61 others became the first group from England to journey to America. These Pilgrims, as they came to be known, sailed from Plymouth, England, aboard the Mayflower. In November of 1620, they landed in what is now known as Provincetown Harbor.

Before leaving their ship, the Pilgrims wrote a plan for self-government, called the Mayflower Compact. The Mayflower Compact was the first European plan for self-government in the New World. In December, the Pilgrims sailed across Cape Cod Bay and settled in Plymouth. At the beginning of the 21st century, Plymouth is home to more than 45,000 people and has a thriving economy largely based on tourism.
