The United States Naval Academy
George Bancroft established the Naval School at Annapolis, Maryland, in 1845. It was built at the site of Fort Severn, a former Army post. During 1850 and 1851, the Naval School was reorganized as the United States Naval Academy. It is the oldest military college in the United States.

During the American Civil War (1861-65), the school was moved north to Newport, Rhode Island. The events of the Spanish-American War (1898) brought great attention to the Naval Academy. Many new buildings were constructed between 1899 and 1907. More expansion was completed in 1976 – the year women midshipmen were first admitted to the academy.
